45 | Previous research on the Austin family of the Eastchester, New York area postulated that Thomas Austin may have been related to John Austin of Greenwich, Connecticut. Edith Austin Moore in "The John Austin Family of Connecticut", written between 1963-1983, says that Thomas was likely the son of Thomas Austin & Hannah. She says, "In this year (1710) there appears in the census of Eastchester, the name of Thomas Astin, age twenty-six, along with several other names familiar, also contemporaneous with Austin as settlers in both Stamford and Greenwich. It, therefore, seems reasonable to suppose that this younger Thomas was the son of Thomas 3 and his wife, Hannah, and that following the death of his mother (1710) he moved on into Eastchester, Westchester Co., N.Y." Genealogist James M. Downey (2017) also thought that the Thomas Austin of Eastchester was probably born in Fairfield County, Connecticut. James M. Downey writes, “Thomas Austin, born c.1684, settled in Eastchester by about 1705. At Eastchester he married, c.1707 (age 23), Sarah VALENTINE. She was born at Eastchester c.1689, daughter of Matthias Valentine (born 1665) and his wife Mary ODELL. These families lived in the western part of Eastchester, close to the Bronx River, the boundary separating Eastchester from that part of Phillipse Manor, which in 1786 became Yonkers. Valentine's Bridge, the neighborhood surrounding the family's bridge over the Bronx, was their ground zero.” It has been proven through DNA evidence that the Thomas Austin of Eastchester line is not related to the John Austin of Greenwich line. Thomas is from the R-haplogroup and John is from the I-haplogroup. Daniel Berry Austin (1946) thought that this Thomas Austin was the one who married Esther and that they were the progenitors of the Westchester County Austins. Daniel denoted Thomas' father as David Austin without providing any reference for that. So far, no evidence has been found for a David Austin. The Thomas who married Esther is actually a son of this first Westchester County Thomas Austin. Steve Henderson June,2023 | AUSTIN, Thomas (I8756)

48 | BIRTH-MARRIAGE-PARENTS: Elizabeth "Bettie" F. AUSTIN, was born around 1830, in Campbell Co., VA. She was not listed on the 1830 census with her parents, so it is assumed she was born right after the census was taken. She is the fourth child oof Miles and Nancy (SLEDD) AUSTIN. Elizabeth and John WALDREN were married on October 15, 1853 in Franklin Co., VA by minister John W. LEWIS, no surety. Recorded in Marriage Register #1, page 2, line 6. The register stated she was a daughter of Miles AUSTIN. The register did not name John WALDREN's parents, but the 1850 Franklin Co., VA census showed a John WALDREN, age 19, in household #1526, headed by Isaac WALDREN, age 46, farmer, real estate value $300.00. Isaac WALDREN is probably his father. The mother was not on the census with this rather large family of eleven children. To date I have not found the 1850 census of Elizabeth AUSTIN and her parents. I assume they were in Franklin Co., VA and were missed in the 1850 census. "Virginia, Marriages, 1785-1940," index, FamilySearch https://familysearch.org/pal:/ CENSUS: The 1870 Franklin Co., VA census, page 3/314, lists John WALDREN, his wife, four children and his father-in-law, in household #15-15, on September 24, 1870 living in the Brown Hill Township, as follows: John WALDREN, 40, white male, farrm laborer, personal property value $102.00 (born ca. 1830-VA). Elizabeth WALDREN, 40, white female, keeping house, (born ca. 1830-VA). Nancy WALDREN, 14, white female, at home, (born ca. 1856-VA). Isaac WALDREN, 13, white male, at home, (born ca. 1857-VA). Elizabeth WALDREN, 12, white female, at home, (born ca. 1858-VA). Moses? WALDREN, 8, white male, at home, (born ca. 1862-VA) (listed: Samuel at 1880). Miles AUSTIN, 70, white male, at home, no occupation, (born ca. 1800-VA). CENSUS: The 1880 Franklin Co., VA census, page 68-A, shows John WALDREN, his wife, two sons, daughter-in-law and one grand-daughter, living in Rocky Mount District on June 29, 1880, household #575-575. All family members born in VA. John WALDRDREN, 39? (age wrong, should be around 50) white male, farmer. Bettie WALDREN, 34? (age wrong; should be around 50) white female, wife. Samuel WALDREN, 18, white male, son, laborer, (born ca. 1862). Isaac WALDREN, 21, white male, son, laborer, (born ca. 1859). Lucy WALDREN, 18, white female, daughter-in-law, (born ca. 1862). Nellie G. WALDREN, one month old, white female, grandchild, (born ca. May 1880). DEATH-CENSUS: Elizabeth "Bettie" F. (AUSTIN) WALDREN, died sometime between the June 29, 1880 Franklin Co., VA census of her family and the June 1, 1900 Roanoke Co., VA census, page B-1/164, of her daughter Nancy (WALDREN) AUSTIN's family. John WALDREN, age 67, widowed, farm laborer, white male, born April 1832, was living with his son-in-law William H. AUSTIN and daughter Nancy Ann (WALDREN) AUSTIN, on June 1, 1900, in the Salem district. I do not know where either are buried. They are not listed in the Franklin Co., VA Cemetery Book. But that does not indicate they are buried elsewhere. The cemetery book contains names of marked grave sites, and there are many persons buried there in unmarked graves.
