  • Notes
    • I first became involved with the Ambrose Austen family story in the 1980s while searching the internet for my own family. I met Diane Austen of Long Island, California who gave me the Genealogy of Austen and Pearce families and added the familly to my growing list of Austen families to research. In time I made contact with other members of the family: Marge and Thomas Austen of Mansfield, Caroline Pinkers of Seattle who commissioned professional research of Ambrose' origins and shared the meagre results with me, and Larry Pearce of Pennsylvania and many other Austen descendants since.

To preserve the research I joined AFAOA and became the compiler of this family on the Austin Families Association of America database and website. Since then I have joined the Guild of One-Name Studies (GOONS) and have an Austen website (austen..one-name.com). I would welcome hearing from anyone who would be interested contributing to my Austen collection and specifically in joining AFAOA and taking over the oversight of the this Ambrose family tree. I wrote a first draft of the story, reproduced in the histories here with considerable input from Marge and Caroline. But its very much a first try, especially with respect to the American end of the story; I suspect that not much more of the English origins will be found, although it is beginning to look like Ambrose's grandfather was a John of either Kent or Sussex.

      A note on sources

      Published sources.

Genealogy of Austen and Pearce Families. From 1757 to 1911

This is a genealogy produced for an Austen-Pearce reunion in 1911 by John
Thaddeus Austen, Charles W Austen and Edwin A Austen. Apart from a couple of typing errors, this document appears to be generally pretty accurate in the material it provides, particularly the early dates that are given.

      The Tice - Pearce Heritage

This was written by Fred A Tice, and published in 1967. Fred Tice was a son of Henry Tice and Lillie Pearce, granddaughter of Susan Austen and Richard Pearce. It is based on earlier information attributed to Susan Austen Grubbs and included as quotations, and revised by Bertha Hughes (sister to Fred Tice). In addition it incorporates some research by Fred Tice during visits to England (and Germany) in 1952 and 1958 and Dr Willard Austen with whom Mr Tice corresponded.

Family narrative as published on website as the Original Family Narrative (OFN) by Larry Pearce, author uncertain.
      http://e-gen.info/?page_id=32

Also published here as "Austen Family written by Jim Austen"

According to the text, the author's father was Thomas P Austen, son of Charles, son of Ambrose Austen. The text repeatedly refers to Grandfather Austen, clearly meaning Charles.

It may be that the Tice document is based on this "narrative". Both contain passages that indicate a misunderstanding of actual events; the Tice version acknowledges some of these errors. In addition the timing of events is at times astray. Some events recorded in this narrative are left out of the Tice version. But while there are many errors, it is probable that the essential core
of the events did occur; that a Charles was in the navy an/or army, that he had escort duties to Royalty, that there was a sheep station, etc. It is also interesting that in neither version is Ambrose mentioned by name. In only the "original narrative" is Charles' father mentioned; "My great Grandfather bought him (Charles) a lieutenancy in the Army and Navy". It is curious (to me at least) that in neither version is the fact of Ambrose's emigration to Ohio mentioned, or even hinted at.

The Grubbs Family: The Pennsylvania Division
by Thaddeus Grubbs, Lane Co. Oregon and retyped by Caroline N Pinkers.

Over the years many other family members have sent me corrections, updates and new information which have been added or incorporated. Without doubt there is a lot more.
