W. J. AUSTIN, INVENTOR OF RAIL JOINT, IS DEAD
William J. Austin, inventor of the Austin steel weld rail joint, died Tuesday morning at his home, 694 Prospect avenue [2850-52 Prospect Ave.], after an illness of eighteen years with paralysis.
Mr. Austin was born in Toronto, Can., eighty-two years ago, and had lived in Milwaukee for the last twenty-six year. Besides the Austin rail joint, which has been used successfully on Milwaukee street railways, and at Portland, Ore., he was alslso the inventor of a lime extractor and condenser, which was widely used through the United States some years ago. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Millie Austin, and four daughters, Mrs. Jeane Hartung, Mr.s Edna G. Koehler, Florence M. and Emma L. Austin.
Funeral services will be held at the residence, 694 Prospect avenue, on Thursday at 10 o'clock. burial will be a Fond du Lac.

The remains of William J. Austin, inventor and former resident of this city who died in Milwaukee, Tuesday morning, were brought to this city yesterday afternoon at 1:19 o'clock over the Chicago and North Western Railway for Interment at Rienzi Cemetery. The funeral party went directly to the cemetery. Rev. W. P. Leek conducted the services at the grave. The body of Mr. Austin was laid to rest beside the bodies of his parents and a sister who died in this city. Mr. Austin was born January 27, 1837, in Toronto, Canada.
In the party accompanying the remains were his daughters Florence M. Austin, Emma L. Austin, and Mrs. Edna G. Koehler, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hartung, all of Milwaukee, and a brother, James E. Austin, Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. F. F. Groelle and Mrs. H. A. Kocher of Milwaukee and Mrs. Walter Stephens of Oshkosh, friends of the family.
Returning from the cemetery the funeral party visited the home of Frank E. Sizer, 394 Forest Ave. where dinner was served to them by Miss Jennie B. Sizer and Mrs. Ellen J. Gault. The widow of Mr. Austin was unable to accompany the body to this city.
The party returned to Milwaukee at 5:10 o'clock.
